(Photo: VNA)</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>Work on two major automobile manufacturing and assembly plants with Chinese investments will start in northern Thai Binh province in the first half of 2025.Geely Auto Group, a leading Chinese automaker based in Hangzhou, and Vietnam’s Tasco Joint Stock Company plan to commence construction of an automobile manufacturing and assembly plant in Tien Hai Economic Zone in June 2025. The first vehicles are expected to roll off the production line by early 2026.Under their cooperation agreement, the two companies will establish a joint venture for automobile assembly and distribution in Vietnam. The factory, covering 30 hectares, will have an initial production capacity of 75,000 vehicles per year. The project has a total investment of 168 million USD, with Tasco holding a 64% stake and Geely Auto 36%.As part of the partnership, Tasco Auto, a subsidiary of Tasco, will become the official distributor of Geely vehicles in Vietnam. The first model to be introduced to the market will be the Geely Coolray, a compact SUV that has already gained popularity in the Philippines and Russia.Beyond manufacturing and distribution, Geely and Tasco also plan to invest in local supply chains, R&amp;D centres, and workforce training programmes to support the long-term development of Vietnam’s automotive industry.Meanwhile, Chinese automaker Chery’s subsidiary, Omoda &amp; Jaecoo, has partnered with Vietnamese conglomerate Geleximco to establish a manufacturing plant in Hung Phu Industrial Zone of Thai Binh province.The 800-million-USD facility is scheduled to begin construction in the second quarter of this year, with the first phase expected to be completed by early 2026. Once fully operational, the plant will have a production capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year.Ahead of the factory’s launch, Omoda &amp; Jaecoo has already introduced their brand in Vietnam, initially distributing the OMODA C5 SUV, which is imported from Indonesia. In January 2025, they expanded their lineup by introducing the Jaecoo J7 PHEV. The brand has also established 20 dealerships nationwide.These investments are expected to strengthen Vietnam’s automotive industry, boost localisation efforts, and create thousands of new jobs./.

I have visited 20 cities and provinces across the country from Lao Cai and Yen Bai provinces in the North and Ca Mau province in the South.Via these contacts, I was impressed by the fact that Vietnamese people are extremely proud of their national traditions, always cherish and preserve as well as inherit the culture and customs imbued with national identity. A series of events related to pho and ao dai have proven this. Each region has its own rich nature and unique charm. Sometimes, I come across scenes that are very similar to Japan, such as the terraced fields in Sapa and Mu Cang Chai or the custom of pounding rice cakes made from green rice.In terms of economics, Viet Nam has achieved one of the highest economic growth rates among ASEAN countries and I feel that the Vietnamese people are very confident about the future. Japanese companies are also particularly interested in investing in Viet Nam. I consider Vietnam as one of the ASEAN countries with the potential to soon achieve a GDP per capita exceeding US$10,000.How do you evaluate Viet Nam's foreign diplomatic policy?Ambassador Ito Naoki: Over the past few years, Japan and Viet Nam have continued to share our strategic interests while a series of major geopolitical changes have continuously taken place in the international community. For Japan, Viet Nam is an important partner in realizing the goal of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.In November 2023, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Japan and Viet Nam agreed to promote cooperation on the basis of "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World". (Photo: baochinhphu.vn)</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has approved the investment policy for the construction and infrastructure development of the Song Mai–Nghia Trung Industrial Park in Bac Giang province.The decision, issued under number 198/QĐ-TTg on January 21, 2025, grants approval for a project covering 197.1 hectares with a total investment of 2.8 trillion VND (111 million USD), of which 434.9 billion VND will be contributed by the investor.That investor will be the Hanoi-Bac Giang Industrial Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Company and it will be developed across Nghia Trung commune (Viet Yen township), Song Mai commune and Da Mai ward (Bac Giang city).The industrial park has a 50-year operational timeline starting from the date the land is allocated, leased, or its usage purpose is changed.The Deputy Prime Minister has instructed the People’s Committee of Bac Giang province to oversee the province’s industrial park management board in defining the project’s implementation timeline in the investment registration certificate. However, this timeframe must not exceed 30 months from the date of land allocation, leasing, or conversion.The Ministry of Planning and Investment is responsible for appraising the investment policy and managing the industrial park per relevant laws on investment and industrial development.The People’s Committee of Bac Giang province is tasked with ensuring the project aligns with the provincial land use and zoning plans for 2021–30, with a vision towards 2050.The plans must be approved by competent authorities under land and planning legislation. Furthermore, the province must allocate sufficient industrial land quotas to ensure the project adheres to its approved schedule./.

With China launching economic stimulus measures, including hefty investments in industrial infrastructure, the rubber industry is already feeling positive effects. China's automotive industry, a giant in rubber consumption, is on track for continued expansion, fueled by robust domestic and export demands.Nguyen Duc Dung, Deputy General Director of the Mercantile Exchange of Vietnam, pointed out that Vietnamese rubber producers are in a prime spot to capitalise on this trend. Not only is there an uptick in demand from China, but also from neighboring Southeast Asian nations, buoyed by a global economic recovery.China remains the largest market for Vietnamese rubber exports. In 2024 alone, the country imported 2.4 billion USD worth of Vietnamese rubber, or 70.5% of Vietnam's total rubber export value, he said.According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the country earned 3.4 billion USD from exporting 2 million tonnes of rubber latex last year, down 6% in volume but up 18% in value. Meanwhile, it spent 3 billion USD on importing 1.9 million tonnes, resulting in a trade surplus of 400 million USD.VRA Chairman Le Thanh Hung said the value increase was a direct result of soaring prices, with the average export price jumping from 1,350 USD to 1,701 USD per tonne in 2024. This price escalation is closely tied to the heightened demand from Europe, which holds a major share of the global rubber trade, accounting for 31-34.5% of exports./.

However, Dien said the figures lagged behind the potential and strengths of the two countries.He spotlighted untapped potential in pharmaceutical cooperation, calling for foreign investment in Vietnam's medicine, vaccine, and medical equipment manufacturing sector. The country is seeking Poland’s expertise in energy transition and efficient energy use technologies, Dien stated.He urged Poland to support Vietnam in removing the European Commission’s yellow card against its seafood and expediting the ratification of the EU – Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).The partnership should be expanded to retail distribution networks, he said, proposing closer cooperation between Polish retail groups and Vietnamese manufacturers to facilitate Vietnamese branded products' entry into the Polish and EU markets while developing Vietnam as a regional supply hub.Amidst formidable challenges across the globe, it is necessary for the two countries to cooperate closely and effectively, especially in trade, industry and energy transition to better their resilience. Enhanced economic and trade collaboration both bilaterally and in the framework of the ASEAN and EU blocs will benefit the two countries, he added.Paszyk, for his part, said Poland has recognised Vietnam as its most crucial trading partner among ASEAN nations and a premier investment destination in the Asia-Pacific region, expressing his hope for trade balance and expansion of trading goods.A notable development was the successful entry of Polish blueberry in the Vietnamese market following the third meeting of the Poland-Vietnam working group on agriculture, he said, suggesting more dialogues between phytosanitary organisations to promote market access for high-quality Polish agricultural products in the Southeast Asian country.Poland has initiated internal procedures to ratify the EVIPA, he added.The meeting concluded with both ministers signing the minutes outlining key initiatives for economic cooperation. Key areas of focus include strengthening political and diplomatic ties, enhancing defence and security collaboration, building a shared borderline of peace, stability, cooperation and comprehensive development, fighting activities of hostile forces, and combating transnational crimes.Economic connectivity should also be tightened, with Vietnam further sharing experience in macroeconomic stabilisation, sustainable development and business climate improvement with Laos.They will work to encourage Vietnamese firms to invest in priority sectors of Laos, especially high-tech agriculture, renewable energy, mineral mining, and tourism. Both sides will explore special mechanisms to facilitate Vietnamese businesses' partnerships with foreign companies to carry out investment projects in Laos. More investment and trade promotion conferences should also be held with the participation of large businesses and important partners like Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the EU to attract investment.Phuong recommended joint efforts be made to secure annual growth of about 10 - 15% in bilateral trade turnover.Aside from electricity trading and wind power projects in border areas, education and human resources development remain a priority, he said, noting that the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment will also enhance the efficiency of aid projects to help Laos boost socio-economic development.The official emphasised the need for the countries' Cooperation Committees to work together to oversee aid-funded projects to ensure progress and effective resource allocation.

The plan sets the goal that more than 30% of coconut areas will be produced according to GAP and equivalent standards by 2030, while the area of coconut plantations with assigned codes for traceability will reach about 30%.The open marketIn mid-August 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Administration of Customs of China signed a protocol on plant quarantine requirements for fresh coconuts exported from Vietnam to China. This is a significant milestone, opening great opportunities for Vietnamese fresh coconuts to conquer the billion-person market. Statistics show that China consumes approximately 4 billion coconuts each year, about 2.6 billion of which are fresh coconuts.While the demand is high, China's production capacity is still limited, creating an ample room for Vietnamese coconuts to penetrate this market deeply. In 2024, fresh coconut exports to China were expected to reach 250 million USD, accounting for 25% of the total export value of the entire coconut industry. Nguyen Phong Phu, Technical Director of Vina T&amp;T Group, stated that China is a populous market with a high demand for coconut products, especially fresh coconuts, coconut water, coconut oil, and processed coconut products.In terms of geographical location, Vietnam has many advantages thanks to its proximity to China, offering reduced transportation costs and time compared to other countries in Southeast Asia or Africa. The free trade agreements between ASEAN and China also create favourable conditions for reducing taxes and boosting trade. Vina T&amp;T Group has exported large quantities of Vietnamese coconuts to markets such as the US, Australia, Canada, etc., and will focus more on the Chinese market in the coming time. The company currently has one packing facility registration code and three regional planting codes, ensuring the export of coconuts to China in large quantities.In addition to the Chinese market, the US is also a major consumer of coconut products, with growing demand for processed products such as coconut water, coconut oil, and coconut flour. The US imported large quantities of coconuts year round to meet domestic consumption needs.According to data from the International Trade Centre (ITC), in the first eight months of 2024, the US imported 44,910 tonnes of fresh coconuts, either with or without the husk, valued at 47.35 million USD, marking an 11.5% increase in volume and an 18.8% increase in value compared to the same period in 2023. In the first eight months of 2024, the US significantly increased its coconut imports from Vietnam, with Vietnam’s market share in the total US coconut import volume rising from 0.76% in the first eight months of 2023 to 8.59% in the same period of 2024.Along with market opening, logistics play a crucial role in quickly bringing Vietnamese coconut products, especially fresh coconuts, to key markets. Dang Dinh Long, Chairman of the Board of Mega A Logistics, said: "In addition to transporting coconuts by road through border gates, sea transport is currently the most economically efficient method."Recently, cold chain systems such as storage facilities and refrigerated containers for exports to the Chinese market have been improved and upgraded. At the same time, logistics companies have worked closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade to reduce logistics costs, thus helping to enhance the competitiveness of coconut products. Accordingly, the logistics cost (per coconut) is only about 3,000 VND, while the plantation codes and packaging facilities are quickly inspected and cleared by the quarantine authorities of China’s General Administration of Customs in less than 12 hours.Increasing competitiveness through qualityCurrently, in addition to Vietnam, countries such as Thailand and Indonesia are also exporting large volumes of coconuts to China with competitive quality. This requires businesses to both improve their products and maintain reasonable prices. At the same time, they must diversify high-value-added coconut products such as coconut milk, coconut candy, and coconut-based cosmetics.Huynh Quang Duc, Deputy Director of Ben Tre Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the province has the largest coconut plantation area in the country, covering over 80,000 hectares and accounting for 88% of the coconut area in the Mekong Delta and nearly 42% of the coconut area in Vietnam. The coconut tree has been identified as a key crop and a source of income for more than 200,000 rural households. To date, the province has 133 coconut farming regions with assigned codes covering 8,391 hectares, and 14 enterprises have been granted packaging facility codes to export fresh coconuts to the Chinese market.Ben Tre has established an organic coconut material area of over 20,781 hectares, which is evenly distributed across the districts of Binh Dai, Giong Trom, Mo Cay Nam, Mo Cay Bac, Thanh Phu, and Ba Tri. The province has formed a value chain closely linked with eight major enterprises, which possess modern technologies for processing and exporting organic coconut products to various markets, including the US, EU Japan, China, Canada, and the Republic of Korea. Every year, coconut exports bring in more than 350 million USD for Ben Tre Province.“The clear direction of competing through quality has led the province to consistently advise production, packaging, and export units to strictly adhere to food safety regulations, quality standards, and plant quarantine procedures as outlined in the protocols and related regulations. Compliance with these rules not only ensures exports to China but also enhances the quality of coconut products, opening opportunities to access other markets around the world,” emphasised Duc.

With an area of nearly 200,000 hectares, Vietnam's coconut industry is becoming one of the key economic sectors in the Central Coastal and Mekong Delta provinces. In 2010, coconut export revenue only reached 180 million USD, but by 2023, it had surpassed 900 million USD. In 2024, the coconut industry is expected to exceed the one-billion-dollar mark, ushering in a period of strong growth.

This still puts Viet Nam as the fastest growing economy in Southeast Asia in 2024.Positive signs from the across-the-board institutional reformsChakraborty held that there are positive signs from the across-the-board institutional reforms recently initiated, with welcomed improvements in many important areas like the public investment law, procurement law, electricity law and public-private partnership.If effectively implemented, these broad reforms can enhance efficiency by reducing bureaucracy, improving public services and cutting the cost of doing business and energize additional growth drivers, he added.Remarkably, the reform in public investment law can further support the economic recovery and foster overall economic resilience.Public investment is a critical engine of economic growth. According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, an increase of 1 percent in public investment disbursement corresponds to a 0.058 percent increase in GDP growth. In addition, every VND1 of disbursed public investment capital stimulates VND1.61 of investment capital from the non-state sector.The government has recently undertaken significant reforms in revising public investment law to address longstanding challenges in the preparation and implementation of public investment projects, aiming to streamline the approval procedures for ODA-funded projects.Therefore, recent broad base institutional reforms in Viet Nam are welcomed not only for public investment but also for the overall economy. Donations from the dead are still very limited, unable to meet the increasing need for tissue and organ transplants.The registration rate of tissue and organ donation among the general population and especially the rate of tissue and organ donation after brain deaths in Viet Nam remains very low.The rate of organ donor registration is currently 0.086 percent of the population with around 86,000 donors throughout the country.Given the situation, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 9, 2024 called on all Vietnamese adults, regardless of gender, ethnic groups, religion, or region, to register as an organ donor.Donating organs and tissues is one of the most meaningful presents one can give to others. Thousands of people in Viet Nam have received successful organ transplants and their lives have been spared because of the generosity and sharing of good-hearted people, he added.&nbsp;Regulations for organ donation in Viet NamCitizens who are aged 18 and above and have full capacity for civil acts can register to donate their tissues and organs.They can print out a form on the portal of the Viet Nam National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation, fill in the form, and send it plus a photo of themselves and a copy of their ID cards or passports to the center's headquarters at Viet Duc University Hospital at 40 Trang Thi Street in Hoan Kiem District, Ha Noi.They must include the phone number of the recipient, 0915060550, on the envelopes containing the above papers.Those wishing to register to donate their tissues and organs can also directly make the registrations at Viet Duc University Hospital.They should bring a photo of themselves and a copy of their ID cards or passports./.
