<figure class="image image_resized" style="width:777px;"><img src="https://bcp.cdnchinhphu.vn/thumb_w/640/344443456812359680/2026/5/13/who-17786803331481560646960.jpg" alt="WHO: Hantavirus risk remains low in Viet Nam - Ảnh 1."></figure>WHO Acting Representative in Viet Nam Dr Jennifer Horton"This is situation is a serious reminder that, as we have seen many times, diseases do not respect borders," Jennifer Horton said during an interview with VGP.&nbsp;To help protect people from health risks with the potential to cross borders, Governments – including Viet Nam's – work together under the International Health Regulations (IHR, 2025) of the World Health Organization (WHO) to build and sustain their countries' capacities to detect and respond to any disease threats.For example, in 2025, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health, in collaboration with WHO and partners, carried out an evaluation to help the country address gaps in preparing for, detecting and responding to public health emergencies, such as disease outbreaks or disasters.The MoH supported by the WHO Country Office, has proactively initiated public communications, drafted an interim guidance on surveillance, prevention and control of Hantavirus disease, and directed enhanced vigilance and rodent control at major airports of entry.WHO's Country Offices are working closely with WHO experts in Regional Offices and Headquarters. This international response includes rapid risk assessments, providing technical guidance to Member States, and directly coordinating the complex disembarkation and repatriation of passengers in Tenerife under strict health protocols.Dr Jennifer Horton stressed that preventing hantavirus infection depends primarily on reducing contacts between people and rodents.Effective measures include: keeping homes and workplaces clean; sealing openings that allow rodents to enter buildings; storing food securely; using safe cleaning practices in areas contaminated by rodents; avoiding dry sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings; dampening of contaminated areas before cleaning; strengthening hand hygiene practices.As with any infectious disease outbreak, when cases are suspected, early identification and isolation of cases, monitoring of close contacts, and application of standard infection prevention measures are important to limit further spread, the WHO Acting Representative finalized./.

The risk to the global population – including Viet Nam – remains low, as the outbreak is primarily confined to a specific international cruise ship, with no Vietnamese people reported to be on board, said World Health Organization Acting Representative in Viet Nam Dr Jennifer Horton.

On May 7, 2026, the 27th Meeting of the ASEAN Economic Community Council (AECC 27) took place in Cebu City, the Philippines. The Vietnamese delegation attending the meeting was led by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang, accompanied by representatives from several relevant units under the Ministry.The 27th ASEAN Economic Community Council Meeting was chaired by Cristina Aldeguer-Roque, representing the Philippines as ASEAN Chair for 2026. Delegates also commended the proactive role of the ASEAN Chair in steering adaptive policy proposals, particularly through the Special AECC Session on the Middle East situation held on April 30, which explored strategic solutions to mitigate risks of energy supply disruptions while ensuring energy and food security.Based on an updated report presented by the Philippines, the meeting acknowledged progress in implementing the 19 Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) under the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026. Notable achievements included efforts toward the substantial conclusion of negotiations for the ASEAN - Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA) and the signing of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). Particular emphasis was placed on the progress of negotiations on the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), with the goal of concluding negotiations and signing the agreement in 2026 to strengthen regional competitiveness and further contribute to ASEAN’s economic growth.In addition, the meeting took note of ongoing discussions concerning Timor-Leste’s fulfillment of obligations related to ASEAN economic agreements as part of its accession process toward full ASEAN membership. The meeting also discussed the elevation of the ASEAN–ADB partnership through the anticipated signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between ASEAN and ADB, featuring a proposed financial support package of up to USD 30 billion. The package is expected to support ASEAN in realizing the ASEAN Vision 2045, with a focus on strategic infrastructure projects such as the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), digital transformation, and capital market development.At the meeting, Deputy Minister Phan Thi Thang highly appreciated the leadership role of the ASEAN Chair in proactively adapting to and responding to the fast-changing and increasingly complex developments in the global economic and trade environment. The Deputy Minister shared several policy recommendations and cooperation orientations that ASEAN member states could consider in order to strengthen the resilience of the regional economy against external impacts. A monitoring and management platform for environmental protectionIn the context of the government issuing the Development Program for the Environmental Industry (EI) sector for the 2025 - 2030 period, environmental protection in the mining sector is shifting from impact control to becoming a strategic pillar of development. The program sets the goal of developing domestic technologies, equipment, and products in the EI sector, promoting circular economy and environmental protection, with digital transformation identified as one of the essential tools.At the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industrial Group (TKV), this orientation has been implemented through a series of coordinated action programs. As early as the end of 2024, the Group issued resolutions, directives, and action plans related to environmental protection and sustainable development, notably Resolution No.212-NQ/DU and Action Program No.02/CTr-TKV. Environmental management software and databases have been perfected, along with training sessions for main production units starting April 2025, ensuring regular updates of environmental data to serve management and administration.&nbsp;Meteorological monitoring stations have been installed at critical areas and connected to rainfall monitoring software for disaster prevention. A disaster risk alert software was put into operation from September 2025. TKV’s Environmental Monitoring Data Management Centre has been upgraded and automatically connected across the Group to enhance monitoring efficiency at production sites.In operation, TKV maintains 48 mine wastewater treatment stations, 39 industrial wastewater treatment stations, and 80 domestic wastewater treatment stations, ensuring that discharged water meets quality standards. Dust control is implemented extensively through over 125 misting devices and 167 specialized watering vehicles, while environmental sanitation is maintained on more than 30km of transport roads, especially near residential areas and spoil sites. TKV has completed all 44 comprehensive environmental protection plans at major production areas, achieving 100% of the target, demonstrating a clear shift from isolated treatment to total, coordinated spatial management.Alongside wastewater, solid waste, and air pollution management, TKV actively carries out environmental restoration, with planted areas in 2025 reaching approximately 100.2% of the plan, raising the total area to around 2,480ha, reflecting a strong link between extraction and environmental restoration. Chuyen emphasized: “Implementing digital transformation in environmental monitoring not only helps us manage data in a timely manner but also provides a solid basis for planning risk prevention and enhancing disaster response capacity. This marks a shift from reactive to proactive thinking, serving as a pillar in TKV’s sustainable development strategy.”Towards sustainable development and circular economyThe 2025 - 2030 EI Development Program targets that by 2030, Vietnam will master 70 - 80% of wastewater treatment technologies, 60 - 70% of air treatment technologies, 50 - 60% of solid and hazardous waste treatment industries, and meet 60 - 70% of domestic sorting and recycling needs. The Group also builds the EI goods market through domestic enterprise support, expanding market demand via orders and direct contracting, developing capacity in supplying EI equipment, technology, and products, and organizing trade promotion and foreign investment attraction.In innovation and digital transformation, TKV supports enterprises in applying international management systems, CAD/CAM, mechatronic equipment, and intelligent control systems. The Group develops biosensor products and biotechnological production lines serving the EI sector, while promoting digital application across all stages of operation and environmental monitoring.&nbsp;Nguyen Manh Chuyen affirmed: “In 2026, we will continue implementing digital transformation linked to real-time environmental management. The alert, monitoring, and command system will enable TKV to prevent incidents at the source, minimize environmental impacts, and integrate across the entire production value chain. Based on the RSU's 2025 Annual Report, the countries discussed the implementation status of this Unit, including proposals for adjusting and expanding personnel, the implementation of technical support functions for member countries, as well as issues related to the Terms of Reference (TOR) and the future direction of the RSU's activities, given that the current term of the RSU will end at the end of 2026. The meeting also reviewed the financial contributions of members to the RCEP Trust Fund and the budget plan for the next phase. In addition, participating countries were updated on the progress of building the RCEP Agreement's website to enhance access to information for businesses and the public.Regarding the membership expansion process, the meeting discussed issues related to the review of applications from interested economies. Based on the responses of applicants to the questionnaire assessing readiness to join the Agreement, the countries exchanged views on the next steps to promote the accession review process, including expected timelines and work plans for the next phase. The meeting also heard a report from the ASEAN and East Asia Economic Research Institute (ERIA) on the research assessing the readiness of economies interested in joining the RCEP Agreement, thereby supporting member countries in their consideration and decision-making.In addition, the meeting began initial discussions on preparing for a comprehensive review of the RCEP Agreement, a crucial task that RCEP Leaders and Ministers have directed to be implemented in the near future. The participating countries also heard reports on the results of meetings of sectoral committees, including the Committee on Rules of Origin and the Committee on Services and Investment, and discussed issues arising during the implementation of the Agreement, including the difficulties and challenges faced by member countries and businesses.Furthermore, the meeting discussed the RCEP Joint Committee's work program for 2026, as well as other issues related to further strengthening the Agreement's institutional framework, including Indonesia's proposal to establish an RCEP Secretariat by upgrading the current RSU.
