The national energy labeling program serves as a state management tool to encourage the use of high-efficiency products, gradually phase out outdated technologies, and foster a culture of sustainable consumption within the community.The program has made a significant contribution toward achieving the target of reducing national energy consumption by 8 - 10% during the 2019 - 2030 period under the National Program on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy.According to the latest national energy statistics, the industrial sector accounts for more than 50% of Vietnam's total energy consumption. Surveys and practical assessments indicate that Vietnamese industries have the potential to reduce energy consumption by between 20% and 30%. Meanwhile, with annual growth in newly commissioned building floor space exceeding 40%, the energy-saving potential in Vietnam's building sector is estimated at 30 - 35%. Photo: NHInformation released at the launch ceremony showed that the Energy Efficiency Awards for Industry were first organized in 2017 by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Science and Technology for Economical and Efficient Use of Energy. To date, the awards have attracted the participation of more than 240 enterprises, generating 1,620 energy-saving initiatives. A total of 126 individuals have also been honored by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Association of Science and Technology for Economical and Efficient Use of Energy.Meanwhile, after five years of implementation, the Energy Efficiency Awards for Buildings have attracted 155 participating organizations and received more than 1,200 energy-saving solutions. A total of 89 projects in the categories of newly constructed and renovated buildings that met the award criteria have been recognized and granted certification.Over six editions, the Highest Energy Performance Product Awards have recognized more than 600 products and granted them the Highest Energy Performance label, while 19 brands have been honored by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. All submissions will be&nbsp;evaluated&nbsp;through an objective, independent and transparent process&nbsp;against&nbsp;a comprehensive set of technical criteria and performance indicators covering the technologies, solutions, equipment and products nominated for the awards.The application period will run from&nbsp;June 29 to October 31, 2026. In the first five months of 2026, bilateral trade reached USD 1.6 billion, with Vietnam’s exports to Israel reaching USD 462 million, a remarkable increase of 30.6% year-on-year. It is forecast that if the current growth momentum is maintained and no abnormal market fluctuations occur, bilateral trade in 2026 could reach about USD 3.9 billion, with Vietnam’s exports exceeding USD 1.0 billion. Photo: Can DungSafe and stable electricity supply maintained in the first half of 2026Reporting at the meeting, EVN President and Chief Executive Officer Nguyen Anh Tuan stated that during the first six months of 2026, EVN successfully ensured a safe and stable electricity supply to support socio-economic development and major political events of the country.Total electricity generation and imports across the national power system were estimated at 171.1 billion kWh, up 9.5% compared to the same period in 2025, while commercial electricity output reached approximately 151.8 billion kWh, representing a year-on-year increase of 9.67%.Against the backdrop of an early and intense heatwave and surging electricity demand, EVN and the National System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO) proactively implemented a wide range of operational measures, flexibly dispatching available power sources, including oil-fired backup generation. These efforts enabled the system to successfully meet record-high electricity loads.On May 27, 2026, the national peak load reached 57,189 MW, the highest level ever recorded. They also proposed solutions to address existing bottlenecks, strengthen energy security, and meet future development requirements.Ensuring adequate electricity supply remains a top priorityAddressing the meeting, Deputy Minister Truong Thanh Hoai emphasized that power source development is a long-term undertaking requiring preparation many years in advance. Photo: Can DungRegarding the list of urgent projects to be implemented in the coming period, the Deputy Minister urged state-owned groups and enterprises to carefully select projects, concentrate resources on those that are truly necessary, and maximize investment efficiency.Based on EVN’s report and discussions at the meeting, Minister Le Manh Hung acknowledged and highly appreciated the efforts made by EVN and energy-sector enterprises in recent years. Despite domestic difficulties, global uncertainties, and challenges to energy security, the energy sector in general and the power industry in particular have successfully overcome obstacles and fulfilled their assigned responsibilities.The Minister noted that growing energy demand and ambitious economic growth targets present both challenges and opportunities for the sector to continue innovating and developing. However, to meet the socio-economic development requirements of the coming period, particularly the country’s high-growth objectives, the energy sector must intensify its efforts and act with greater determination in carrying out assigned tasks.In this context, ensuring sufficient electricity supply for the economy and people’s daily lives remains EVN’s foremost priority.Accordingly, the Minister instructed EVN to continue working closely with Petrovietnam, TKV, and other relevant entities to ensure an adequate, continuous, and stable supply of fuel inputs, particularly coal and natural gas for electricity generation.At the same time, the Minister requested NSMO to coordinate with power generation companies to optimize maintenance schedules and avoid plant shutdowns during periods of peak heat and high demand. Photo: Can DungRegarding electricity demand management, the Minister called on EVN to direct power utilities to work closely with provincial Departments of Industry and Trade and electricity consumers in implementing energy efficiency programs, demand response initiatives, and load-shifting measures. He also encouraged proactive engagement with the Electricity Authority to formulate and recommend appropriate policy solutions.Alongside immediate measures, the Minister urged EVN to strengthen investment portfolio management and implement projects according to established priorities and planning schedules.For key projects, the Minister assigned relevant departments and agencies under the Ministry to closely monitor implementation progress, identify obstacles, and ensure that bottlenecks are fully resolved. Changing traditional preferences for construction materials proved challenging, while the company also faced obstacles related to investment capital, technical workforce development, and market access.Against this backdrop, Chief Executive Officer Nguyen Thi Khuyen and her team gradually overcame these challenges. The company focused on major urban centers in the Northwestern region, targeting projects with high requirements for aesthetics and quality. The objective is to bring projects into operation as quickly as possible to ensure adequate electricity supply for socio-economic development and people's daily needs during the upcoming period of accelerated growth, while supporting the goal of achieving double-digit economic growth.In recent years, the Government, the Prime Minister and the Standing Government have issued numerous directives and official dispatches aimed at ensuring sufficient electricity supply for production, business activities and daily life. The Prime Minister has personally inspected projects, urged progress and resolved difficulties to accelerate the implementation of power generation and transmission projects. The ministry has also issued numerous documents requesting local authorities to implement projects and resolve bottlenecks, including reporting difficulties arising from both legal regulations and implementation processes.In addition, to implement Resolution No. 70-NQ/TW dated August 20, 2025, issued by the Politburo on ensuring national energy security through 2030 with a vision to 2045, the ministry advised the Government in submitting to the National Assembly Resolution No. 253/2025/QH15 on mechanisms and policies for national energy development during the 2026-2030 period. The resolution is intended to address institutional bottlenecks that have hindered development in recent years, accelerate power projects and ensure energy security during the 2026-2030 period.To effectively implement Resolution No. 253/2025/QH15, the ministry has also issued three documents requesting local authorities to review and prepare proposals for updating and adjusting power projects in their localities.Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long urged Ho Chi Minh City to continue working closely with the ministry in reviewing, advising on and proposing the formulation or amendment of legal documents related to the electricity sector to facilitate investment in power projects in line with practical requirements. As ASEAN evolves beyond fragmented marketsFor many years, trade promotion in ASEAN was commonly associated with business missions, trade fairs, exhibitions and business matching activities aimed at helping Vietnamese products reach consumers across the region. Success was often measured by the number of contracts signed, participating enterprises and annual export growth rates.However, regional trade is entering a new phase of development. Global geopolitical shifts, supply chain restructuring, green development requirements and the rapid rise of digital technologies are reshaping how ASEAN economies connect and cooperate.Where ASEAN was once viewed as a collection of separate markets, the region is now increasingly operating as an integrated production and supply ecosystem. Instead, it is about helping enterprises secure a position within regional value chains, participate in higher value-added stages of production and establish a sustainable presence in ASEAN‘s manufacturing networks.In an interview with Newspaper of Industry and Trade, Vu Ba Phu, Director General of the Trade Promotion Agency under Ministry of Industry and Trade, said ASEAN economies are becoming increasingly complementary, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to participate more deeply in intra-regional supply chains.”This presents an opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to move further into processing and manufacturing industries, supporting industries, electronics and automotive components,” Phu emphasized.Current trade patterns clearly reflect this transition. In Thailand, Vietnam’s largest trading partner within ASEAN, technology-related exports have recorded strong growth. In 2025 alone, Vietnam’s exports of computers, electronic products and components to Thailand reached approximately USD 1.8 billion, up more than 102 percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, exports of machinery, equipment, vehicles and spare parts also maintained double-digit growth.”The two economies are highly complementary and increasingly interconnected, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to integrate more deeply into ASEAN‘s intra-regional supply chains,” Vu Ba Phu noted.These figures indicate that Vietnamese businesses are no longer relying solely on traditional export products. Instead, they are gradually becoming more deeply embedded in the region‘s industrial production networks. This trend is expected to accelerate as ASEAN continues to attract investment flows and global manufacturing chains, with many multinational corporations seeking stable and well-connected production locations.Beyond manufacturing, new areas of cooperation are emerging in sectors such as high-tech agriculture, Halal food, cross-border e-commerce, digital transformation, green industries, carbon credits and environmentally friendly products. These sectors are expected to become new growth drivers for intra-ASEAN trade in the coming years.A new competition centered on logistics, green standards and the digital economyIn the past, businesses primarily competed on cost and production capacity. Today, the landscape has changed. Green standards, traceability, supply chain management, smart logistics and digital transformation have become critical factors determining participation in regional value chains.This helps explain why Vietnam’s trade promotion strategy in ASEAN is undergoing significant changes. Rather than focusing solely on trade matchmaking activities, promotion programs are increasingly aimed at enhancing business competitiveness, helping enterprises meet evolving market standards and integrating more deeply into regional production and distribution ecosystems.According to Vu Ba Phu, Thailand is not only a major consumer market but also an important logistics and distribution hub within global supply chains. Vietnam exports large volumes of electronic components and industrial parts to Thailand while importing computers, fully built automobiles and various industrial products from the country. This reflects the growing integration of the two economies within regional production networks.To capitalize on these opportunities, Trade Promotion Agency is strengthening cooperation with major Thai retail groups to expand the presence of Vietnamese products in modern distribution channels while helping businesses meet increasingly stringent requirements related to quality and sustainable development.”We will continue deepening cooperation mechanisms with major Thai retail groups to support Vietnamese enterprises in bringing their products into retail chains, supermarkets and shopping centers. At the same time, we will help businesses improve compliance with technical standards, green requirements, environmentally friendly packaging standards and quality certification requirements from the production stage onward,” Phu said.From another perspective, the Philippines, Vietnam’s largest rice import market for many years, also illustrates the changing requirements of ASEAN trade. Beyond stable supply, the market is placing increasing emphasis on product quality, quarantine standards, traceability, packaging, labeling and supplier capabilities.This demonstrates that trade promotion in ASEAN is no longer about securing short-term orders. It has become a long-term process of building credibility, strengthening brands and meeting increasingly demanding market standards.One of the most notable shifts is the transition from a market-by-market approach to a strategy focused on connecting with ASEAN’s key value centers. While Thailand serves as a major manufacturing hub, Singapore is widely regarded as the region‘s center for finance, logistics, innovation and digital transformation. As a result, Singapore is increasingly viewed not only as an export market but also as a gateway to global value chains.According to Vu Ba Phu, the Trade Promotion Agency‘s strategy is not limited to supporting direct exports to Singapore. It also seeks to leverage the city-state‘s role as a regional hub for trade, finance, logistics and innovation.”Vietnamese enterprises need to shift from the mindset of ‘selling into a market’&nbsp;to that of ‘connecting with a regional hub.’&nbsp;This will help enhance their position within both ASEAN and global value chains,” the Director General said.Against this backdrop, new areas of cooperation between Vietnam and ASEAN are expanding rapidly. This commitment is reflected in Viet Nam's participation in the FCTC on November 11, 2004, as well as the enactment of the Tobacco Harm Prevention Law on June 18, 2012.The National Assembly approved an amended excise tax law in June 2025, which introduces a new mixed tax system set to take effect in 2027, with tobacco taxes scheduled to rise progressively until 2031. In addition to tax increases, another key measure is the creation of smoke-free environments, particularly in public spaces and within the tourism sector.Viet Nam is actively collaborating with the international community to promote tobacco harm prevention and the creation of smoke-free environments, contributing to the protection of public health and fulfilling its commitments under the FCTC./.

The World Health Organization (WHO) awarded Viet Nam a certificate in recognition of the country’s contributions and achievements in tobacco harm prevention and control on the occasion of the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79) held in Geneva from May 18–22.

Photo: Le SonAttending the meeting on behalf of Dak Lak were Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Truong Cong Thai, Director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade Nguyen Thi Thu An, and leaders of relevant departments and agencies.Significant potential for an energy hub in the Central HighlandsReporting at the meeting, Nguyen Thi Thu An, Director of the Dak Lak Department of Industry and Trade, said that under the revised Power Plan VIII, the province has been assigned 125 power generation projects with a combined capacity of more than 14,036MW. Photo: Le SonRegarding the power grid, Dak Lak has been planned in a synchronized manner with nine 500kV substations, 13 500kV transmission lines, 26 220kV substations, 40 220kV transmission lines, and multiple 110kV substations and transmission lines to evacuate capacity from power generation projects. To date, the province has approved investment policy for 15 power generation projects with a total capacity of 892.5MW, mainly wind and solar power projects. Among them, four wind power projects: Cu Ne 1, Cu Ne 2, Krong Buk 1 and Krong Buk 2, with a combined capacity of 200MW have basically completed construction and are expected to be put into operation in 2026. Photo: Le SonAt the meeting, Dak Lak Vice Chairman Truong Cong Thai affirmed that the province would mobilize all resources to accelerate site clearance, identifying this as a key bottleneck that must be prioritized for resolution in order to promote both public investment and non-budget investment.According to the provincial leadership, Dak Lak will settle projects facing obstacles within local authority in order to put them into operation soon, creating conditions for investors that have already disbursed large amounts of capital. Photo: Le SonThe provincial People’s Committee has also assigned the Department of Industry and Trade to conduct a comprehensive review of related tasks and clearly assign responsibilities to each leader and official, demonstrating strong determination in implementing projects and readiness to capitalize on special mechanisms and policies from the central level. Photo: Le SonNo power shortages under any circumstancesConcluding the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long stressed that the implementation of the national power development plan, including the revised Power Plan VIII, is a task of a “mandatory” nature, directly linked to ensuring energy security, economic security and national security. Photo: Le Son&nbsp;Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long said that in recent years, the Politburo, the National Assembly and the Government have issued a number of resolutions and special mechanisms to remove bottlenecks in the power sector. Many of these contain breakthrough provisions, such as stronger decentralization to localities, flexible forms of investor selection, and direct contractor appointment for urgent and key energy projects. However, while mechanisms are already in place, the key issue now lies in implementation, requiring proactiveness, determination and a high sense of responsibility from local authorities.According to the Deputy Minister, for projects already included in the planning, localities need to quickly complete investment procedures, site clearance and investor selection in accordance with legal regulations, avoiding prolonged delays that could result in lost development opportunities. Adjusting project timelines is necessary and normal, but this must be based on a realistic assessment of investors’ capacity, commitments and implementation ability to ensure the feasibility and overall effectiveness of the planning.Regarding the transmission system, the Deputy Minister requested relevant units, particularly Vietnam Electricity and the National Power Transmission Corporation, to maximize resources and absolutely avoid delays in substation and transmission line projects. This is a key factor determining the ability to evacuate capacity from renewable energy projects; delays would lead to waste of social resources and undermine investor confidence.Regarding offshore wind power development, Nguyen Hoang Long said that under current regulations, projects in the 2025 - 2030 period with a total capacity of around 6,000MW fall under the authority of the Prime Minister for investment policy approval, while projects in the 2031 - 2035 period with a scale of around 11,300MW will be decentralized to provincial-level People’s Committees where connection points are located. This places a requirement on localities to proactively prepare infrastructure, land resources, site clearance and significantly improve the investment environment if they wish to attract large-scale projects.The Deputy Minister cited practical examples, saying that coastal localities such as Quang Ninh and Hai Phong are competing vigorously to attract offshore wind power projects, even offering special support mechanisms. Therefore, localities that move quickly, act decisively and prepare well will have a significant advantage in attracting strategic investors.According to the Deputy Minister, an offshore wind power project, once implemented, is not simply a power project but can also lead to the formation of an entire economic ecosystem, including industrial parks, data centers, logistics, technical services and even high-tech agriculture. This is an important driver for regional economic growth and sustainable economic restructuring.Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long affirmed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to accompany localities, promptly addressing difficulties and obstacles within its authority, while reporting issues beyond its authority to the Government.
